Internship at Channel 7

This semester has been moving along at a rather quick pace! I was fortunate and landed an internship at KMGH, Channel 7, which has been a great experience so far. I am interning in the Promotions/Community Affairs department, but I’m trying to do as much as possible in all areas of the station. One of my biggest goals coming into the internship was to learn Final Cut Pro, and I am slowly getting there! Each day, I edit the 30 second promotion for the Dr. Oz show. This is a great opportunity that allows me to become more familiar with the software.
A couple weeks into the internship I had the opportunity to shadow my boss from Promotions, as well as two other people from the Promotions/Creative Services department, on a shoot. There were three promos they wanted to focus on. These were their “Beat the Traffic” application for your phone, school closures and footage of people walking to add to their 7-day weather forecast. For the first promo, we went to Evans and shot footage of traffic on the highway. This is when I first realized how tricky this could be. It was sunny and very cold that day, but how would we have reacted to the footage had it been snowing? After we did that, we drove to Littleton to shoot some footage by the Light Rail station. This is where things got especially exciting because I got to be in it! Once we arrived, they showed me where I would be standing and how I would look down at my phone, as if I was using the app, until the Light Rail arrived. This portion of the shoot took about fifteen minutes because they wanted to make sure they had different options to use in the commercial. Once we were done there, we drove back to downtown Denver and shot various footage to use for both school closures and people walking for their weather segment. Once we were at the station, another great learning aspect was watching some of the editing process on After Effects.
The following week, I got to assist two gentlemen from the Promotions department in one of the station studios as they shot footage of Channel 7’s main personalities using the phone app. The people we recorded were Mike Nelson, Anne Trujillo and Mike Landess. I had a great respect from this moment on of how complex it can be to shoot what seems to be a simple commercial. It took us about two hours to put the set together, even though each recording only took about fifteen minutes.
As of last week, I have also started learning iNews. This will be on ongoing process where I will write a 30 second script for the 7Everyday Hero and once Mitch Jelniker does that voice-over, I will put together the hero package.
Finally, on Sunday I went to the station to shadow Kami Carmann, who is one of the Sports Anchors. I watched as both she and Lionel Bienvenu prepared the sports segment for the 5:00 p.m. newscast and also got ready for the 10 p.m. news. It was great watching Kami edit one of her packages and observe how they gathered a lot of their information. After that was completed, I got to watch the newscast live, which was definitely a neat experience.
I look forward to learning much more in the near future!
